Scientists have carried out the first large-scale digital scan of the Titanic ship using deep sea mapping, the BBC reports. The remains of the ship are at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, at a depth of 3800 meters. It is noted that the technology made it possible to obtain a unique three-dimensional image of the entire ship. The researchers hope that thanks to this, new details will be revealed from the shipwreck that happened in 1912. “We still have questions, simple questions that need to be answered,” expert Parks Stevenson told the BBC. According to him, the model is one of the first serious steps in that direction. The wreckage of the Titanic was discovered in 1985, and since then researchers have used various methods, but the size and depth of the ship have not yet made it possible to reconstruct a complete image of the ship. The scanning operation was carried out in the summer of 2022 by mapping company Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions, which is making a documentary about the project. The remote-controlled devices spent more than 200 hours underwater studying and photographing the remains. From the 70,000 images received, scientists created an accurate three-dimensional image. Many things are scattered around the Titanic: personal belongings of passengers, shoes, statues, even unopened bottles of champagne. Researcher Parks Stevenson said he was shocked when he saw the first photos. According to him, the water is gradually destroying the ship, microbes are corroding its skeleton, it is gradually falling apart. Researchers are well aware that there is less and less time left for the full disclosure of the marine disaster.
