A couple who met in the 1950s and are now in their 80s dated for a year when they were younger, but they broke up because of their busy work schedules and the fact that they both had careers.
They hadn’t seen each other in 60 years, but when they ran into each other at a retirement home, they got married.
Ron Owen, who was 84, and Ruth Holt, who was 79, started dating after working together for a year at the same office.
Ruth was only 18 when Ron started working on cruise ships as a singer when he was 23. Ron was trying to start a career in show business while Ruth got married to someone else and moved to Saudi Arabia with him.
She didn’t want anything to stop Ron from getting ahead in his job. After some time had passed, Ruth moved to India.
After some time, she went back to the UK. She did several things there, like use a typewriter and answer the phone.
Even though they lived tens of thousands of miles apart, Ruth thought that Ron was «the one» and that she would always love him.
Ron is a singer and entertainer who likes to sing old songs made famous by other artists, like Matt Monroe and Frank Sinatra, when he performs in clubs and other places.
He thinks of himself as a true football fan, and he has worked as a scout for football teams like Norwich City and Fulham.
Ron never got married because he had so much going on in his life. Besides that, he was a director on cruise ships for the four years before that.
Ruth got a divorce in 1983, and she lived alone for the next 20 years. She is the mother of two boys and the grandmother of four grandchildren because of her marriage.
2014 was a great year for Ron and Ruth. After being apart for sixty years, they were able to find each other again.
She knew right away who Ron was when she walked into the room because music was playing in the area where she stayed.
Ron moved into the bungalow just across the street from where Ruth lived two weeks before the chance meeting.
When Ruth heard that a man with the stage name «Ronnie Ray» had moved in, she didn’t believe her ears at first.
Ruth told her story: «When I was living at home, my sister came over to see me one day. She said she went to a party in the community hall where a «great singer was on.»
She also talked about a person named Ronnie. I said, ‘Ronnie Ray?’ I almost fell through the floor when she said yes.
I went to see Linda, our warden, to make sure it was the person I thought it was, and she confirmed that it was Ron Owen. I couldn’t believe it for a second!
Ron’s warden told him that Ruth had asked about him, and he also told him where Ruth lived. Ron went to see Ruth at her home in St. Anne’s, which is in the county of Lancashire, after not seeing her for more than 60 years.
“He got to the bottom of the stairs leading up to the front of my bungalow, but he said he was having trouble getting up them, so I came down to see him,” Ruth said, smiling.
“Right immediately, we got right down to business, and it was like if we had never stopped talking. It all started with a few casual get-togethers over drinks and talk, and from there, things moved along naturally.
I couldn’t believe we were together again. I had a lot of respect for him when we were dating. I’ve always wanted to be with him.
After being alone for more than 20 years, I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found a partner.
The two people were able to get along again, and in the end, they moved in together. In July of 2018, while Ruth and Ron were watching TV together, Ron asked Ruth to marry him.
Ron said, «When I was in my 20s and Ruth was 18, I’d talk to her and take her to Preston Greyhounds on Thursday nights.
When we saw each other again, we started talking, and three months later, we were best friends and in love.
About a month ago, we were sitting together and watching TV when I asked her out of the blue, «Do you want to get married?» She was on the verge of falling off the couch.
Although I’m looking forward to it, I must say that I’m also a little bit anxious.
I’ve gone on stage in front of a thousand people, and while I haven’t been anxious at all, I’m about to do something that I’ve never done before.”
Ruth said, «We were together for more than a year before we decided to break up because Ron wanted to pursue a career as a singer.
I’ve always wondered where he was and what he was doing over the years. I read his name for the first time in a local paper about six years ago.
I’ve never heard of two people who had been apart for so long getting married. I never thought that would happen to me.»
In September, Ron Owen and Ruth Holt will get married, and 50 family members and friends will be there to help them celebrate. The couple will finally get back together after 60 years.
